85 - Xaleph - Rurouni Kenshin 'Departed'

This is a song I finally finished after several years of just letting it rot.  3 days ago it was only 1:49 seconds long, I finally gave it a great deal of focus and finally finished it.  Since we don't get a great deal of songs on the queue, I'd like to put my stuff through the queue just like everyone else.  If it starts becoming overwhelming, I'll post mine directly.  Until then - here it is.

Sounds freakin' great. I would recommend replacing the piano with another sample though, since you're always putting pianos into your UNTS, how about this time an acoustic guitar or some kind of bizarre plucked instrument? Also, not really a fan of how the piano just "starts," especially like that, when it just suddenly "hits." A longer buildup would benefit this song greatly, considering the style. Not having the piano start right away would be a big plus in my book. These things notwithstanding, it's still very passable, but I'd like to see what happens if these changes were made :). YES

Love the tape slowdown effect at the beginning :)  Nicely done.

As with usual for Xaleph, it's well-thought out, well-produced dance music, and it's way past the quality bar for this site.  YES

Re: 85 - Xaleph - Rurouni Kenshin 'Departed'

You've definitely improved since you started this site, which is awesome since you were setting a pretty high bar to begin with. The best part of this sound is, overall, the variety in the sample and synth textures. You have some really crunchy percussion, EQ'd better than a lot of professional things I've heard. The gated choir (a la Waterpipe Angels, in a good way) provides a nice background rhythm.

Going back to the intro, I'm going to disagree with OverCoat and say that the way it starts out really sets the mix up just right. The piano sounds smooth and yet not generic, and it establishes the melody you're remixing immediately, while the "boopy" synth in the background establishes the electronic vibe. Nice builds and breaks into the 1:40 revival of the main melody using a detuned lead - it's not anything unusual but it's just what the doctor ordered. 2:07's breakdown showcases the groove and the effort you've put into getting really awesome percussion samples there.

My one and only gripe with the mix has to do with the high-pitched lead from 2:34 to 3:29. Frankly, it hurts my ears just a little bit. Now, this might be partly the fault of my tinny earbuds (listening at work) but I don't think any synth that sounds that close to a screech should be continuously on for nearly a minute. I love the riffs and improvisation you do with it, but the synth literally takes no breaks during the time period it's around. A few more ins and outs would have reduced its impact.

I also think this song could have benefited from a more complete bassline during the breakdowns starting at 3:43. You've got a wonderful texture for the bassline, and that's the sort of part that can and should be on for long continuous streaks, but instead it cuts out for just brief, tantalizing riffs.

Flaws aside, it's a top-notch remix. Glad to hear you're not only still active, but still improving.

Yeah that's a screen capture from a flashback he had as a kid.  Thought it would be pretty cute ^_^;;.  I got it from this site that reviewed the series.

Hey=) Nicely thought out track. Very technical, however, if there's one thing to complain about is the bass drum. I didn't like the sound of it at all=( Sounded too much psy-trance/goa to me (Great genres, but not in this setting)
Anyways, definately a nice remix:)
