44 - Mythril Nazgul - Sailor Moon 'Moonlight Tango'
Moonlight Tango from Sailor Moon
Remixed by MythrilNazgul
Download this mix!
This is, as I'm starting to get accustomed to hearing from Mythril, something different, in a good way. The only remix on the site with the genre "tango" -- as it probably will be for a while -- takes a familiar SailorMoon theme, which was even covered by djpretzel on OCR for the Sailor Moon video game, a long time ago -- and tangoes it up with some latin horns, in honor of his 3-year anniversary with girlfriend rainbowflavoured -- happy aniversary!
As for the mix itself, the main work is done by a couple of horns -- a trumpet and a saxaphone, it sounds -- and a piano. The piano sounds nice, and very authentic tango, maybe even salsa. As for the horns, they're not quite so stellar, but it is really hard to come by really good brass soundfonts. Still, the attack in particular on the horns just seems all wrong and too piano-like, (for example around 1:27 or 2:01) which is too bad because some of the melodies and countermelodies he has them playing are very nice. The percussion plays a nice tango beat, though the soundfonts there aren't so great either. Near the end there's a kind of "clap" sound which sounds pretty cheesey, too. The -- well, Mythril claims it's a xylophone -- doesn't sound so bad, either, though one of the better sounds is the FRAMENCO (Z0MG ENGRISH!) guitar in the background.
The soundfonts for the mix can't ruin the amazing remixing that's been done to it. This is one of several songs on AR of which I've actually heard the original. There have been a lot of changes made to the melody, aside from tweaking the tempo and fitting it with tango percussion. The part where the two horns start improvising around 1:30-ish is really quite nice. Also, during the piano rendition of the melody, the low-end accompaniment fits surprisingly well, even though I don't recall hearing it in the original; if it is something new, as I think it is, then it's some nice composition on Mythril's part. Also, the piano riff for the transition at 1:12 fits both the original song and the genre perfectly, which is pretty dang skillful; in fact, most of the transitions sound really good, except one or two that are kinda ruined by the trumpet soundfont. The ending itself is serviceable but not particularly exciting.
Overall, it's a creative rearrangement of a simple track, and I definitely like it a lot better than the original. An additional bonus is the way it's actually so different from so much of the music on the site at present. If you're a sound-purist, and you don't like "fake"-sounding samples, you'll probably be put off by several of the fonts used herein, but the mix redeems itself in other ways. More nice work from MythrilNazgul.

Just a note, the "improv" that begins at 1"30 is actually a remix within a remix, of the main theme song to PGSM (Live Action Sailor Moon). Echoes of Tuxedo Mask's theme are also found in the intro.
Please don't hate me for those samples.

Markedly different from the original music, though still easily recognisable as derived from it, this is what in my opinion a good remix is like. Mythril Nazgul has managed to create exactly that in this new tango. While the instrumentation has been altered, and the timing changed to fit the genre this is still recognisable as the theme we all know.
Those who have seen Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon are in for a treat as well, because about 1:30 into the song the horns start playing a remix of the main theme. Two remixes for the price of one really (and so much better because that price, as always is free).
The one complaint I have is the quality of the sound samples The Bass isn't as full as it could be, and the xylophone(?) at around 0:02 sounds more like clanking than a real instrument. there is a slight problem with the horns as well, but it's hard to get good samples of horns. There might also be maracas in the mix as well, but it's hard to distinguish them.

Re: 44 - Mythril Nazgul - Sailor Moon 'Moonlight Tango'
I'm new and I don't know much in the way of music. I did like this piece but I got a little bored of it once the original Sailor Moon song came in. I've heard so many song with this part in it (even though it may be sped up or slowed down or even to a different instrument).
I would have loved to hear a song with a more remixed version of the original piece of the Sailor Moon song.
I have a very nice song on my computer called Knight of Tuxedo which I've never heard in the dubbed version (Sailor Stars being the only version I've watched in Japanese). It has a wonderful...I guess I could say mariachi-type instrumental sound to it. I think it would sound lovely remixed.
MN's song was a good listen. I was downloading songs for my ipod and I wanted to add more Sailor Moon songs to the already big list and I decided to listen to this. I'm glad I did. It must have been a challenge to do something like this. Much applause for MN.
