December is upon us and it is time once again for our somewhat annual Christmas Competition. I don't think we had one last year, but I don't see what's stopping us from having one now!

Think of it like the Halloween competition that just ended, only more festive and less scary :)

TEH RULES:
-Songs are due Christmas Eve, no doubt you'll want to spend Christmas day listening to the songs [it's like getting presents!] and unwrapping your Nintendo 64s. I may extend the deadline if we don't get many entries.
-The songs should be pretty festive. They don't have to have the whole sleighbells and reindeer deal, just in line with the whole holiday spirit.
-Of course, the songs must be from an anime or cartoon - throwing traditional Christmas songs into your mix would be super cool too!
-When you finish with your song, send a link [from your own hosting, rapidshare, senduit, or any easy-to-figure-out filehosting site] to overcoat at gmail dot com or send it to me on IRC [I am usually on irc.esper.net].

That's all folks! If you want to know the kind of thing we're looking for, here's a beautiful christmas remix by sephire:

<![CDATA[Anime Remix Present and Foreseeable Future]]> http://www.animeremix.org/animix_forums/viewtopic.php?pid=17604#p17604 Wed, 19 Nov 2008 03:05:16 -0500 So we had a Halloween competition. Everyone loves a competition, but that's over with. "Now what?" you may ask. Well, for the past half a year or so, Xaleph's been pretty hard at work on a completely new version of AR, which is publically available for test here:
http://dev.animeremix.org
As you can see, it looks much much different, and he'd love your feedback on what you'd like to see added, changed, or removed from this new version of the site. Any bit of feedback, from a short comment to a few lines of code would be super appreciated by either of us.

On my end of the site administration is the "public relations" stuff :3. I'm going to start a Christmas competition soon, even though every year that I try to, I get no entries ;_; but maybe this year will be different!.

I will also be at MAGFest and will have the opportunity to talk about Anime Remix through another panel, I think. If you're going: I'll see you there! If not: What the hell is wrong with you MAGFest is awesome GOSH!!!
http://www.magfest.org/
It's in less than 2 months!!! I am so excited.

This year we got 2 entries, a trance song from Avaris and a super creepy ambient tune from a new face to the competition, One Thousand Worlds. Yeah, sorry, I didn't enter this year and neither did Xaleph, but life's kinda slapped us on the face this month - Xaleph with yet another adorable baby, and me with a tiring, unfulfilling full time job that for some reason started giving me split days off this month, not to mention I was researching to vote on something far more important than any remix competition. Also, this is mainly my fault but I bought Fallout 3 ... so there goes a lot of my time :(! I'm sure you all had your reasons as well.

Anyway, enough about Matt and I, let's talk about the songs. Since there were only two three submissions this year, should we even bother voting? What do you guys think?

[1]The songs are due October 30th at 23:59 Eastern U.S. time, the day before Halloween, so we can all listen to the songs on Halloween.
[2]The songs must be in mp3, ogg, or wma format [if you're into that sort of thing]. There is no limit on length, though try to make the song longer than a minute.
[3]The song must be a remix of a song from a dark/horror-themed/halloween-ish animation OR a dark/horror-themed remix of any animation [e.g. a demented version of the Chipmunk's theme song]
[4]When you finish, find hosting for your song [senduit or rapidshare, or your own webspace, etc, as long as it's not a hassle to download] and private message me on the Anime Remix messageboard with the link, or send me the song through IRC, I'll usually be in #animeremix on EsperNet.

Have fun everyone! I'm looking forward to some great entries like last year! Speaking of which, here's the previous years songs:

<![CDATA[PAX Recap. Also: MAGFest 7 is not so far away!]]> http://www.animeremix.org/animix_forums/viewtopic.php?pid=17427#p17427 Thu, 11 Sep 2008 06:26:56 -0400 So I went to PAX, guys. Had quite a bit of fun - mostly eating, drinking, and attending the awesome concerts. Jonathan Coulton, MC Frontalot, The Minibosses, etc. Most of the bands were great except for Freezepop, as usual. I went to the showroom a few times and got lots of posters and pins, and got a chance to play StarCraft 2. Lemme tell you guys, it's going to be great; it's basically the same old StarCraft with new units and pretty graphics, so what could possibly go wrong, right? I also met with Mustin for a bit. Apparently po! was there but I missed him entirely, which kinda sucked.

As for the next big event, MAGFest is coming up in 3 very short months, so I hope some of you are ready! I am going to attend this MAGFest again. Though some might find the timing a bit inopportune, I don't really want to spend another New Year's Eve with my family so I will be at the Hilton counting down. Very excited. Anyway, I know a few of you are in the Virginia area so I hope you can attend this year. I did briefly meet with Avaris at MAGFest 6, it'd be cool to see him at this one too :).

In the distant future, hopefully we'll have an active enough crew to plug Anime Remix on an official level - perhaps next year at Anime Expo? :)

As you may have seen before, the only member of the Judges group [not counting the moderators/admins] was zircon, who hasn't actually posted here since... 2006! So I added Avaris, someone who is a tad more active than "never here," and is one of our more effective musicians on the site. Welcome aboard!

The best part is how I added Avaris without prior notice, and he just starts judging. Go Avaris!

Here is the article on ANN

Eri Kawai passed away on the 4th of this month due to health problems. Most of us here would know her as Athena from the ARIA series, who sings to the passengers on her gondola. She had a very light and pretty voice, primarily singing music for anime, including AIR and Utawarerumono. I'm unsure what kind of health problems they were, or even how old she was, though - nobody seems to be reporting that. Quite a loss, regardless. I encourage anyone not familiar with her work to watch the three ARIA series out there [Animation, Natural, and Origination], if they can, it's quite good, very relaxing.

RIP

Anyways the competition starts now and ends the morning of the day it releases. I'll personally meet you all at the track (pun intended) ready to race.

Deadline: May 9 2008 (the same release as the movie coming out)
What to remix: Any song from the original Mach Go Go Go soundtrack.

http://compo.thasauce.net/rounds/view/AR24C2 - Code Geass, lets dew it!

Just finished seeing Code Geass. What a great anime, I would have to say it's one of the best anime I've seen in quite some time. I highly recommend it.

Anyways the song is Innocent Days by Hitome. Absolutely amazing piece, very powerful. There are plenty of ways to download this song, I put up a youtube link, but the chances that it'll be gone/removed by the time this goes up is high.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bomaaJ3Dklo

I will be holding a compo this upcoming Friday/Saturday. I've played around with a few of the song choices that I may put up (just to ensure the remixability is there). With that said, I'll be giving a good chunk of Friday and to the end of Saturday for the competition. I may even rip the midi I put together for this one, so you guys have a simple set of tracks to work with. If you're interested in helping set up this compo with wav samples from the anime, feel free to contact me, I'll be on irc very frequently (though I may be idling).

<![CDATA[The Patch, Projects/Competitions, and a Compo]]> http://www.animeremix.org/animix_forums/viewtopic.php?pid=16798#p16798 Mon, 25 Feb 2008 12:21:59 -0500 It's been a while since I've been able to type fluidly and I'm glad I can finally 'officially' type with the approval of my hand surgeon. There are three things I would like to address.

I. the patch.

The next patch has some pretty large changes in it and I was about 50% done before the accident. I was planning on releasing the 'user end' changes (60% approximately) and at a later build would implement the admin features to manage these changes. The patch basically consisted of these things:

New Copyright Agreement:
The wording is basically there, I just need approval to use this from the admins before I put this up. This for the most part is 100% complete with some likely minor wordsmithing.

Anime Library
I'm adding an Anime Library pertaining to the remixed songs on the site. This will promote the Anime more as we can provide more indepth information on it as well as links to well used sites to gather more information. AnimeNfo.com also has a webservice available to pull back information that I am trying to develop for. This will give us dynamic content (which is a plus), but is rather complicated to program and I'll need a way to store local information in the case AnimeNfo has server failures. A very basic functionality will be available on the first patch, and will become more indepth once the first phase is tested/debugged thoroughly.

Song Library
Since we'll be pulling information, having the original song's information will be the next step. At 100% I'm hoping to have this added. There is a lot that goes into this, so this feature may be implemented well after the others on this page.

Menu System revamped
I've changed the menu system slightly as a result of new content as well as changed older content. Nothing massive, but it has changed nonetheless (and is xml based, so I can quickly change it or modify this dynamically, maybe future custom menu settings).

General Face Lift
There are some new pages as well as positioning changes that make the site look a little newer/sleaker.

Competitions and Projects
I've designed a system that will handle Competitions and Projects that will tie songs to each one of these projects more easily. This way you can see if a song you're downloading got second place in a competition - click on the competition to see the overall results, and then click on the link to view the forum post for the competition. I'm looking at doing something similar to the way ocremix handled projects with regards to - it has it's own unique site per project. This really simplifies development and segments out the 'custom project code' from the physical site. A project recently came in and requires that this is worked on immediately.

Admin Control Panel
I'll be adding a control panel that allows an admin to perform functions without having to navigate to the actual song/anime to modify it. It'll also allow lookup values in drop downs to be modified (among other things).

II. Projects/Competitions

The second item on the list was "Projects and Competitions"

To reiterate in the case it was skipped over:

Competitions and Projects
I've designed a system that will handle Competitions and Projects that will tie songs to each one of these projects more easily. This way you can see if a song you're downloading got second place in a competition - click on the competition to see the overall results, and then click on the link to view the forum post for the competition. I'm looking at doing something similar to the way ocremix handled projects with regards to - it has it's own unique site per project. This really simplifies development and segments out the 'custom project code' from the physical site. A project recently came in and requires that this is worked on immediately.

This means that projects and competitions will be available on the front page and more of a "big deal" than what it currently is. Other than what is said in the patch, I want to start having some more competitions, or group projects to create more of a community of remixers.

Which leads me to....

III. Compos

If you remember, we used to have Compos every now and then. I want to get some feedback on when this week people would be available for an hour or two hour Compo. If I can get a schedule together, I think we can start doing this on a regular basis.

Anyways it's great to be back - lets start pumpin' out some rhythm!

<![CDATA[What is your New Years Resolution?]]> http://www.animeremix.org/animix_forums/viewtopic.php?pid=16562#p16562 Mon, 31 Dec 2007 09:59:16 -0500 GO GO GO 2008!

So here we stand at the end of 2007 looking across the edge to a new year. Looking at current events, we just had some pretty major things happen around the world. Pakistan is on the brink of civil war, the RIAA is suing their consumers for ripping mp3s from legally bought CDs, the US is going into the primaries for the 2008 election, and the Chipmunks is actually second in sales to National Treasure:Book of lol. Personally, I have a lot happening this next year. I may finally get a copy of Reason 4.0 (my parents decided to get me an iPod, grandparents a still digital camera, parents-in-law a digital motion camera... all nice things, but they weren't on my list or even things I would remotely buy for myself), WoW:WotLK is coming out (I don't know if I can stomach more Blizzard sellouts... they now pander to a casual community), my parents will probably move away from where I currently live (kinda sucks... but that's military life for you. No actual news yet, but they've lived around for 1-2 years... usually they tell you to move after that length of time), and I get to finally apply for my M.S. in CS since I did well in those courses as a non-degree.

So what happened this last year for Anime Remix? Our downloads and site references grew drastically from January 2007 to December 2007. Our best month was November. I have a list of the top downloaded songs on the site available to me, if I get an overwhelming consensus that I should release it for New Years, I will do that (I'm pretty sure several people didn't like this idea a while back). Also, this last year has been successful with regard to being more popular with Japanese viewers. Our most popular IP hits (that have downloaded several Gigs of songs or more) are from these locations: United States, Canada, Australia, EU, Germany Japan, England, Singapore. Tuesdays at 21:00 EST are the highest traffic times... not that this really means anything - but I thought it's interesting.

As far as a New Years resolution, I have no clue what I'm going to choose. I had thought about no chocolate - but I really don't eat a lot of it anyways, and quite frankly I've lost a ton of weight (194 lbs now instead of 219) as a result of a change in lifestyle. I would choose something dealing with my son - but I'm so proud of him, and I get to spend tons of time with him anyways. My wife is absolutely amazing, and our relationship is doing great. So I really don't see very many things that I really need to change with my immediate status. Now here is where I'd like to change, I need to read more. Whether it's reading fictional novels, historical recordings, documentaries, political books, religious concepts, or even the Bible, I need to get reading back into my life. I'm finding that my writing as a result of not consistently reading has become lackluster with regard to vocabulary and proper grammar. I know it's probably the dumbest and most 'parent-style' resolution you'll ever hear - but I feel it's really holding me back.

So I'll say it again:

My new years resolution is to read at minimum 10 minutes a day in some book (not online).

What's yours?

<![CDATA[Anime Remix Christmas Competition 2007!]]> http://www.animeremix.org/animix_forums/viewtopic.php?pid=16448#p16448 Wed, 05 Dec 2007 16:04:12 -0500 Anime Remix Christmas Competition 2007

http://www.animeremix.org/competitions/Anime%20Remix%20Christmas%20Competition%202007/AnimeSanta.jpgBackground Context
It is now December, the month that many people of many cultures meet with their families to celebrate one of several holidays expressed in this season. Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa are among such fine traditions that have kept families together and promoted wonderful activities to help each other. Christmas particularly has influenced a great deal of artists to create 'Christmas Specials' that started in the mid 1900s and have continued to present day. Japanese animators started creating their own 'Christmas Specials' in various anime, either as individual episodes belonging to a longer series, as a complete movie, and 'Itsudatte My Santa! (Always My Santa)!' is a great example of the third media - it's own series.

As a result, Anime Remix can not ignore some of the most influential animated movies during this season and as a result, we have decided to hold this competition once a year. Some of the more popular titles include, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Jack Frost, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and that one mini Christmas Don't Be Late - The Chipmunks.

There is a list I'll attach below this post once I've put up all the rules, but there are quite a bit of Christmas Specials which may or may not have unique songs. This draws me to my next point - other holiday music not related to, or slightly related to an animation.

There are some songs that are simply 'holiday songs'. A good example of this is 'Jingle Bells', 'Silver Bells', 'Jingle Bell Rock', etc etc. These songs are wonderful to have, but simply aren't from any particular anime. Yes, they may be used from animated films - but these definitely were composed to be used as holiday songs before the animation came out. 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer' was composed for the 1949 film where as 'Little Drummer Boy' was a Czech hymn that was re-arranged as a holiday song in the early to mid 1960s, and then a film was created to boost the sale of the records in 1968 - another version was recreated and displayed in 1976. My point being, what came first, the song or the cartoon? In the case of Little Drummer Boy - the show was specifically used as the founding of the film. This is where I may be a bit more lenient - especially since the original song was written a long long time ago in the Czech Republic. So what am I being lenient about, you may ask. Well then, let me proceed to the guidelines.

http://www.animeremix.org/competitions/Anime%20Remix%20Christmas%20Competition%202007/snow_small.jpgChristmas Competition 2007 Guidelines
1) Allow 'winter theme' Anime/Cartoon (ie like Anastasia or The Polar Express)
2) Allow Claymation and Computer Graphic winter/christmas (like Rudolph and Jack Frost)
3) Allow 'winter/cold theme' songs (like wolf's rain later episode themes as well as the closing theme)
4) Allow any winter holiday musical theme to be remixed*

*Although these songs will be hosted in the competition voting and result post - if the remix is not originally or even remotely from an animated film, it will most likely not make it on to the site as an actual submission.

There is already a ton of material out there - you can merge several holiday themes together if you'd like for extra bonus points =P.

http://www.animeremix.org/competitions/Anime%20Remix%20Christmas%20Competition%202007/scrooge_small.jpgHow to Submit an entry
In order to submit an entry please send an email to the following:

Submissions must be sent before the 18th of December

[mail]sabol.matthew@gmail.com[/mail] with the title "ARCC2007 - " + the name of your song.

The file format can be mp3 or ogg

The encoding must be at minimum 128 kbps or the equivalent in ogg format.

If there is a holiday song that you wrote, performed, or re-arranged that you simply want to be displayed - feel free to post them in this topic.

Hottest Singaporean Male of 2007 and Dragon Boat racer
OC Remixer
Anime Remixer

Unfortunately Reuben has left us early, as he had an accident during the Dragon Boat festival in Cambodia and drowned. I had never talked to him all that much but his contributions to Anime Remix are very nice, plus he had a few tunes on SoundTempest back when that was still going, and I will definitely miss him. In the meantime we can at least enjoy the great music he contributed to the site. My thoughts go out to his family and friends, as well as the rest of the Dragon Boat team he was with.

ANIME REMIX HALLOWEEN COMPETITION 2K7!

Villains always have the coolest themes. This competition revolves around "scary" anime, "evil" anime music, and villain theme songs. We also accept normal remixes that are simply scary (like a spooky chobits mix or something). This is the biggest anime remix yearly competition.

Currently our label will be shut down for three days until they verify that we're not putting up illegal music >.>.

After that the next batch will be uploaded and we'll probably have to go through the same process.

Anyways the new DistantJ remix or as he called Extremix that he worked on with Spray is the song that's up. All future songs you can expect to be up on last.fm close to their release date, as far as previous songs - I may need some help if I can figure out how to give roles to other people.

The number of judges I plan on having total is between 3 and 5. I will be reconstructing the judging rules so that the turnaround will be pretty fast (1-2 weeks). Again, I appreciate everyone's patience as we're pushing through these changes.

Actions on last week's topics

[21:34] <Xaleph> Last week I had mentioned several changed would take place
[21:35] <Xaleph> I created the Judge title and gave it to two people already
[21:35] <Xaleph> I set up the boards properly and cleaned them up for the Judges
[21:35] <Xaleph> We have 2 submissions right now in the panel, which is great
[21:36] <Xaleph> I had talked about adding a list of hot anime to be released as well as current top anime
[21:36] <Xaleph> And movies in the states to be released
[21:37] <Xaleph> I held a simpsons movie competition and I contacted someone who is currently in the anime industry to give me some advice on where she goes for news
[21:38] <Xaleph> I'm trying to figure out how to go about putting this list up, I initially said I would create a remixer forum, but tbh that's what we wanted to get away from in the first place
[21:38] <Xaleph> having a ton of sub forums
[21:39] <Xaleph> So I was thinking of either putting into one of the current forums and/or using a front page section to list them
[21:40] <Xaleph> anyways those were some of the main points and the actions associated to them
[21:41] <Xaleph> I was also able to write a remix for the site and complete it, hopefully you'll see it soon =P

Suggestions from those that attended:
1) Poll for hottest anime of the season
2) Have a forum to discuss anime and suggest most memorable theme

(to judge)]]> http://www.animeremix.org/animix_forums/viewtopic.php?pid=15421#p15421 Tue, 07 Aug 2007 18:03:05 -0400 Judge applications have opened as discussed in our last meeting. Please email me or pm me with your resume on the forums your judge application if interested. Music experience and dedication is something I'll be highly interested in.

Also - I'll be adding some additional information to the site about Anime and Movie release dates as well as future competitions we plan on holding. The next meeting we'll have may have to be after my vacation (I leave this Friday and will be out for a week) and I'm not sure if I'll have internet access.

So far I've made Fray on judge status - since he was a judge previously and has expressed interest in judging. I'll be reviewing the judge applications with Fray and SoC later this week.

The major change is that I don't actually plan on judging as I had before - I'll either post it (if it's THAT good) or it'll go straight to the judges. In most cases, it'll go to the judges. I'll also determine someone to manage the judging process - if a submission is posted, this person will move it directly to the judge queue (unless I get to it first).

Again - let me know if you are interested, send me your resume.

EDIT: zircon came back too ^_^

<![CDATA[Otakon 2007!!!]]> http://www.animeremix.org/animix_forums/viewtopic.php?pid=15335#p15335 Sat, 28 Jul 2007 23:53:05 -0400 Otakon 2007!!

Recently, Xaleph, Eko, myself and a friend of mine went to Baltimore to attend Otakon 2007. If you don't know what Otakon is then read up on it!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otakon

For those who are too lazy to click, it's basically a fan convention dedicated to anime (and some video games) so think of a star trek convention but with japanese cartoons instead.

Ok, so what's there to do there?

Well this was my first time attending so I didn't really know what to expect. As expected they have anime to watch and boy do they go all out! They have dedicated huge convention rooms with projection screens which show a couple of episodes of popular animes. I sat down to watch a couple episodes of Disgaea and it was pretty interesting to watch anime with thousands of other people laughing at jokes that you don't find funny and then keeping completely silent to the jokes that you find hilarious. (hmm)

They also had rooms where people would host panel discussions. What type of people? Well there were the Seiyuus (voice actors) and the webmasters of popular anime and video game sites. A couple notable ones were the OCremix (A site dedicated to remixing video game music) panel and the 4chan panel (which I didn't go to)

Into video games? Great! Imagine a convention floor the size of a Price Club/Costco filled with monitors and video game systems. They had games ranging from the popular (DDR, Street Fighter, MVC 2, Guitar Hero etc) to the rare japanese only games (Twinkle Star Sprites, Japanese Taiko Drum Master) If you're competitive in anyway then you will enjoy the numerous tournaments they had running during the entire convention.

Plus there's contests for best costumes, a dance floor, and panels that include "how to draw manga", "Kendo swordfighting", and much much more!

Finally there's the Industry floor that is chock filled with numerous vendors from various locations. If you are even the smallest anime/video game fan you probably will see something that you like. Products ranging from Anime DVDs, Manga, weapons, costumes and kimonos, MMORPGs, and dolls! I myself am guilty of purchasing a Gunblade (from FF8) It's definitely a place where impulsive buyers need to beware!

Okay so what's the deal with those people wearing those weird costumes?

Those people are known as cosplayers. No one truly knows the reason why people cosplay other than the fact that they love a certain character so much that they dress up like them! I honestly think that this was the best part of the whole convention as I saw some VERY good costumes. It's a very strange feeling to see one of your favorite anime characters walk up to you in real life. You just have to take a picture.

Here are some pictures that I took:

People cosplaying as the menu system from Final Fantasy. Creative!

As you can see, some people are extremely dedicated/obsessed with their costumes. These pictures are just a very small sample of pics I have. If you want more I can give you the link to my album. Also if you google Otakon 2007 cosplay, you're bound to find much much more.

Sounds like fun, where do I sign up?

This year's Otakon is over so you will have to wait one more year in June. You can register online at www.otakon.com and tickets cost 60 dollars (for this year at least)

If you find yourself totally impatient and cannot wait one year, I highly recommend googling other conventions. There are a lot of anime/comic conventions and one might be nearby/coming soon! Otakon is supposedly the biggest one though.

Anything Else?

Hmm if I remember anything else I'll be sure to say it. For those who are on the fence about whether or not to attend, I highly recommend it! It's definitely an interesting experience. The only cons are: Baltimore is extremely ghetto and sometimes the smell of BO can get to you. But if you can ignore these two, you'll have a great time! Be sure to take someone with you too! Waiting in line by yourself can be boring. Oh and definitely, DEFINITELY take a camera! You'll never know what you'll see!

Summary, log onto irc at 9:30 and I'll distribute the ventrilo information so you can connect to my server in order to hear the meeting.

I'll upload the meeting topics later today. Remember what I had said the focus was in this post. I would highly recommend you read that post and/or the meeting topics before jumping onto irc/vent.

Comments/Suggestions from those that attended:
- worth trying to promote the site at anime cons (katsucon)
- cost of the booths

I was thinking about what to wear - I'll probably just be dressed in a business suit as my old cosplay-ish outfits no longer fit (several japanese style clothes). Plus, I don't want to wear just normal jeans and t-shirt, gotta do something either fun or funny, and I think the business suit approach would just be funny ^_^.

I'll see if Chaz or some of my other RL friends want to go - but today is the deadline for tickets.

Basically - it really adds a whole new level of synth development as well as some new percussive technologies.

My favorite new feature I think will be the new sequencer. It reminds me a lot of Logic and Cubase - and allows changes from the sequencing window rather than the individual tracks. I'm pretty hyped - you can always go to the Reason 4.0 page to find more information.

Certainly looks interesting.

<![CDATA[Father's Day and DC Zoo!]]> http://www.animeremix.org/animix_forums/viewtopic.php?pid=15117#p15117 Mon, 18 Jun 2007 13:38:42 -0400 Check out the Grave of the Fireflies project and jump into #animeremix on espernet to say hi!

http://www.blog-city.info/en/img1/177_angels.jpgEko, Xaleph, and their son went to the Zoo on Sunday. We saw a lot of great animals, all of which were "WoW" or "Doh Gee". One thing I'd have to say about going on a trip when the temperature is 96 degrees and you decide to take the metro is.... prepare to sweat. Yes I was dripping all over the place, it was NASTY! But nonetheless, we got to see Pandas, Elephants, Hippos, Small Mammals, and Reptiles. Eko is a biologist, so we plan on going back at the end of the summer for a 2 day trip to study the animals a little more indepth.

So yeah, the first place we visited was the pandas. The first one we saw was on the ground on his back panting. It looked like he was just sitting there trying to sleep or relax in the terrible weather. It almost seems like s/he had been there for several hours. The next 2 pandas were actually inside eating, so we got to see a lot more activity. Of course I forgot to put my camera off of flash, and I felt horrible - but it seems that the people at the zoo didn't care. I don't even know if there is a policy against flash cameras - I just know from experience that large bears tend not to react well with flashing lights.

Second place we went to was the Elephants. I don't understand WHY they would ever show an elephant giving birth on replay over and over inside the elephant house. If it was part of a mini-museum it'd make sense, but if you're trying to see the elephants, you are GOING to see some elephant pop out of a mommy elephant. T_T

After that, we decided to go to the small mammal house, since it was air conditioned AND I felt that lil xaleph would find them more interesting. First animal we saw he went nuts. He was banging on the glass and yelling "DOGGY!!!!!". Right above him doing this was a huge sign "DO NOT TAP ON GLASS". ¬ ¬ Yeah it was funny but man I had to keep an eye on him the entire time we were in there. He thought the monkeys were cool - said "wow" really loudly and yelled out doggy to all the animals that walked on all fours.

Yeah - the reptiles were neat, he didn't understand them very much, but I really thought they were cool. In boyscouts, I did this huge study on snakes in their environment - so it was neat to see some of the rare snakes they had. It just saddened me to see them in a small place - like the anaconda was in this itty bitty aquarium. An animal that's supposed to eat large mammals and small children in such a small cage just didn't make much sense. But I guess that's what a zoo is for.

Anyways we had fun - when we got back we crashed, but that was expected.

mDuo13, Redcavalier and myself post stories on this blog related to anime and anime music. We started it back in November 2006 as a site that does things Anime ReMix can't do [and/or shouldn't do!], and since then have spotlighted a bunch of anime music, especially arrangements and remixes. We also link to some songs that are, aren't, or aren't yet on Anime ReMix, write OST reviews, post concert/soundtrack release news, interview artists, etc.

If you'd like to show us something interesting for the blog, have any ideas, or think you should be a regular writer for the blog, let any of us know and we'll figure something out! Also, feel free to comment on any of the existing articles.

This is all a part of a bigger plan to have people acknowledge our small anime/cartoon remixing movement [like, we can totally be the OCR for anime music! lol]

(Christmas Competition)

^^

It's one of those joyous times of year when people can honestly look at each other and appreciate the giving attitude, their religious beliefs, another holiday to spend time with the family, and watch anime/play video games =).

I'll probably be up in New Jersey or down in Southern VA spending time with family this Christmas. My cousins (one of who is a lurker on this site) is really into Anime and does quite a bit of AWESOME art. I'm hoping to watch some shows with her and I have a few on my list to see before the new years.

As far as music goes - I plan on finishing up one of many of my WIPs and at least sticking it up during the Christmas season, as well as putting together some kind of holiday remix.

I love you all guys, and I hope you honestly enjoy a Merry Christmas.

Basically the rules are just like the Halloween competition.
1) Remix must be compliant to the rules on the site.
2) Remix must follow 1 of the following
--A) The remix must sound like a cold winter day AND be from an anime of your choice.
--B) The remix must be from a Christmas Anime.
--C) The remix must be a Christmas Song (if this is the case, you can get into the competition, but it will not be put on the site).
3) Remix must be submitted to OverCoat by Christmas Eve!

We changed the rules a bit from last year - I hope they're more reasonable. Remember, Claymation counts as animation for us =P - gotta love those claymation movies!

<![CDATA[Logo Design Contest]]> http://www.animeremix.org/animix_forums/viewtopic.php?pid=13464#p13464 Wed, 15 Nov 2006 10:36:27 -0500 Logo Design Contest -
Deadline: December 3rd 2006

The idea is to create a simple logo that can be placed on various places on the site.

This is something that I had been thinking about for a while, and after reading something posted by djp, I thought this would be a great idea. I'd been busy for the last month as it has been the start of the fiscal year for my work, and the midterms for my masters took over for a while - but here is the original post by DJP. These will be the guidelines for this competition:

I think AR needs a damn good logo. One that's good enough to keep forever, as I intend to do with OCR's. One that there'd be no reason to ever abandon, and that - even if you keep site theming support intact, which I'm still against - will remain consistent regardless of the site's design.

There's several ways to handle this:

-> I could do several prototypes and it could be "all me" (i.e. I'm volunteering to do it if no one else wants to or Carb thinks that's the best idea.)
-> A few of us here could do prototypes and vote on the best.
-> We could open it up to everybody, make posts inviting submissions by X deadline both here and on the OCR forums, and then hold a private vote or a public vote.

Basic guidelines:

-> Should not include copyrighted characters or other copyrighted materials
-> Should be simple enough to not lose legibility when repoduced at smaller resolutions, i.e. not be overly ornate or representational
-> Should not require color to be discernible/coherent i.e. should look fine when reduced to white on black or vice versa
-> Should kick plentiful amounts of ass

Obviously, that last one's a little subjective. I think a logo's quite important, and lots of large corporations seem to agree with me. Not that AR is a large corporation, but the goal of presenting a unified front and achieving familiarity and brand recognition are very close in spirit.

I finally have a way to add/create/edit songs/remixes/remixers/anime without having to edit the mysql db manually on my dev computer. These updates will be uploaded sometime this week. If the site is down temporarily, I apologize in advance.

Once this is complete, uploading songs will be incredibly easier and I'll put up some of the songs on the list.

I'll be working on the judge control panel after this week.

<![CDATA[Anime Chipdisk Vol. 1 released!]]> http://www.animeremix.org/animix_forums/viewtopic.php?pid=12520#p12520 Tue, 01 Aug 2006 18:01:29 -0400 DOWNLOAD THE CHIPDISK HERE

Finally, the day we've all been waiting for! CHIPDISK DAY! I decided to release it a day earlier here though since Anime ReMix is awesome. There's also a humblefool.net/music/ thread since they're cool too. Coda, Tenemis and Nobuyuki helped me out immensely and I couldn't have done it without them.

Tell your friends!

This is a sizable collection of small, loopable chiptunes of popular anime OP themes, complete with its own player so you don't have to download XMPlay or the winamp BASS plugin or anything. You can also fit the entire thing uncompressed onto a single floppy disk and play it on any computer! I will copy my writeup from the NFO:

Code:

Welcome to the first collection of awesome
                  anime chips! Hopefully public interest
will push us to make another one.
Feel free to send me requests!
For this chipdisk I decided to cover OP
themes from the most popular anime,
                           though Tenemis wanted his
                       Azuki-chan ending to be used.
                              This is okay!
If another anime chipdisk is created, I
may focus on BGM or ending themes.

You may notice some of the songs are a lot
                  different than the original. Especially
those awful OverCoat tracks! Well, changes
happen when you compress something down to
4 channels. There are also some things I
just can't track. At least the melody is
                                 still intact.

Don't forget to turn looping on :)
a lot of the songs take advantage
of song looping, and will flow
                            better if this is on.

Copied and pasted for your ease.

Thanks soc!

So my thought was this, why not hold a competition of one of the older cartoons I sincerely respect?

Here are a few of the cartoons I was looking at.

1) Pink Panther (the venture song would be fun to mix)
2) Batman (I can see a FF7 vs Batman mix, as they're very similar)
3) Gargoyles (ah yes, one of my favorites)
4) Xmen (original cartoon, not the new crappy one).

I don't mind adding more to the list, but let me know what your old time favorite cartoon was.

So basically my remixing has come to a complete halt... which sucks. So now I have ToP and Zircon waiting on me and I'm really not having time to work on this.... Hopefully I'll have time tonight... as long as I don't get guilted into helping tank for AQ20 for some friends, or guilted into gold farming... which also sucks as a prot warrior.

Well my wife is sick so maybe I'll have some extra time tonight (if the baby lets me =D).

Item 1 on my Agenda: Make Zircon happy with a finished remix.
Item 2 on my Agenda: Make KyleCrb very unhappy with a finished remix.
Item 3 on my Agenda: sleep
Item 4 on my Agenda: finish departed (Kenshin)

Yeah this is turning into a blog, but I don't care, I like it =PPPPP

btw I want to put up a competition soon, I had an excellent idea. 5 Bunkie points if you can figure it out.

<![CDATA[Major Bug fixed]]> http://www.animeremix.org/animix_forums/viewtopic.php?pid=12360#p12360 Fri, 21 Jul 2006 11:50:21 -0400 There was an issue with the downloading that just didn't let you download on certain pages but you could download on others.

I went ahead and spent some time fixing up the download.php file reverting it back to a cookie based check instead of a session check. Both of them should work fine, I'll need to look into why one worked and the other failed. For now you'll need cookies turned on if you want to download something. The site is on a domain that windows finds as safe, and the default should enable cookies - so you shouldn't really need to change anything.

So downloading now works as intended.

That's free wifi for you ^^;;

Anyways I plan on uploading a few of the bug fixes today and uploading some song changes.

-cheers (I'll put up some pics from the beach soon)

<![CDATA[Anime Remix 3.0 Released]]> http://www.animeremix.org/animix_forums/viewtopic.php?pid=12216#p12216 Sat, 08 Jul 2006 19:42:09 -0400 http://www.animeremix.org

There are quite a few bugs at this time, so I apologize in advance.

I have this next week off on vacation at this one resort. It DOES have internet access and I will be developing down there to resolve everything I can asap.

images

New images will be loaded from what soc and mduo14 (previously 13) has compiled. The database will need to be updated with the new file names in order to display them on the front page. I'll try to get this done today.

broken sections

There are some broken sections on the site, including the display link, anime-search, and requests. These will be worked on and at least have a filler page till something has been developed.

logo

We'll start a competition soon on an official AR logo. Please stay tuned if you are artistic and want to have a shot at it. If you do send me a logo that I fall in love with, I may just cancel the competition and go with that =P. I'm a pretty easy going guy.

There are a few other bugs on the site that we will resolve - I appreciate your patience as we update the site.

I know many remixers here have songs invested in the site. Because of this, I have invested much of my time in developing an xml based backend structure to make maintenance and development easier and cleaner. I personally feel that the site is somewhat lacking, but because of the new architecture, it will be much easier to add the sections I have planned and some programmed on my dev computer.

I hope you enjoy the site, much work has been put into this, with the help of our dev team (RasutoIbuki, djcubez, djpretzel), test/debug team (too many to mention link here), as well as others who helped design, plan, and provide new images, including mduo and soc. I couldn't do it by myself and I want to give credit where it's due.

<![CDATA[Anime Remix 3.0 to be released this week]]> http://www.animeremix.org/animix_forums/viewtopic.php?pid=12138#p12138 Fri, 30 Jun 2006 16:52:13 -0400 General Information

Since I have off Tuesday and this weekend, I'll most likely have time to finally upload anime remix 3.0

There are some things that need changes and I'll be working on the site actively to make the needed changes.

Many features that were discussed will not be available until I am satisfied that they work properly. Some of the changes that will not be in the release will include:

- logging in from the front page (I had this working, but there is a major security flaw and in no way will I put this up until I can find a safe way to log in AND log out).
- Requests. I had hoped to get this working, however the system would require a lot of work on the users and remixers part and I'm not sure if it's worth the effort to program at this time. What I do plan on doing instead is integrating the request forums to the front page.
- Genre. Genre currently exists now, and there is a lot of debate on whether or not it should continue to be a part of Anime Remix's search engine. You have people who believe genre's are too confining and others who believe that it gives the listeners a tool to search the data on.

Basically you'll have the same capabilities you had in AR2.0 just with a few more features. However the architecture is such that allows me to create new pages and update much more easily. So this can be a living site.

I feel that the site is far from complete, but since the user side works, I don't see why we are still using AR 2.0.

I did work with djpretzel on some concepts/ideas and so many things may be similar to ocr and a few things will be different. The search tables are different that ocr's original design (although I think now they may be similar).

Your Help

testing
I will continue to have the debug forum up for those who are testers and they can continue to post bugs/issues so I can resolve them as fast as I can.

images
There will be some new images hopefully coming to the site to replace the anime pics currently (thanks soc and all else who offered to help with the new images).

music
Some new songs will need to be put up and recent songs will need to be inserted. It may take some time to get all these updates out and I may need some help getting the newer mp3s. Mythril Nazgul offered to re-do the id3 tags so they are all consistant. I may also talk with djp on how to dynamically create the id3 tags upon download.

logo competition
I need to start a logo competition for the site. I do business logos at work, however I doubt that we want a business logo for the site. We want something fun and preferably cute ^_^! So AR will have a competition on logos - if anyone wants to help with the competition I'd greatly appreciate it. I'll set up some rules, but with everything going on with my job, I won't have time to do all the work needed.

Judges

GrayLightning suggested I change the judging system on the site to a forum based system. After 3.0 is released it will be forum based until I can have something better in place that's programmed on the front page. This will take decisions and writeups and dynamically put it on the forums.

Also, I will need to take another look at the judges and replace some, possibly. I may even change the judge system all together.

Over all it's a change to Anime Remix to have a more organized structure to the site and hopefully with the new releases/updates the site will become what you guys have always hoped it'd be.

<![CDATA[Development Status]]> http://www.animeremix.org/animix_forums/viewtopic.php?pid=11595#p11595 Thu, 04 May 2006 17:04:55 -0400 Quoted from the Development section.

Just putting forth a development plan at this point:

1) Finish Schema changes (it's done as far as I can see, just want to review the changes one more time).

2) Migrate queries and database calls to the new schema

3) Finish the 'add new remix to the site' system (half of it is complete - just stopped working on it to focus on the schema).

4) Add Anime Section - where the songs will be organized by anime. I may also create an 'ocremix' style look for this, where the picture of the anime is there, and all the items underneath. In fact, I may make this the alphabet quick links where a drop down of the remixers and other items that begin with the letter appear. Just a thought (let me know what you guys think)

5) Debugging the moderate, major, and critical errors submitted by the debuggers.

After Deployment of the site:

i) Add Judge section (tentatitve, will release the site before this is done as I could just easily put this in the forums)
ii) Admin features - for judge/adding management, not a bad idea to start it a bit before deployment so I have some basic functions.
iii) Fun stuff, like the russian roulette - possibly some 'quick skin designer' where you'd change like 4-5 colors and 4-5 images to create a quick skin. Just something for fun.

We finally worked out some of the kinks in the schema and I'm now migrating data. The XML re-structuring (backend php work) is complete.

I'm not sure what's going on with the Forums - but I'll go ahead and make the changes that Rasuto suggested if he doesn't do it before the 15th of May.

I figured since this would be easy to implement here as well - that I'd go ahead and do it.

I'll put together a judge one very soon.

<![CDATA[Songs with Original Wavs.]]> http://www.animeremix.org/animix_forums/viewtopic.php?pid=11045#p11045 Wed, 15 Feb 2006 16:50:18 -0500 I've been toying with this idea for a while, and I'm going to start posting up songs that have wavs from the original files. I'll do this as long as there is more of the remixers work than the original artist (and the standards are going to be much higher). This means that po!'s song along with others will be posted up on the site. I know that there was a recent submission that I rejected that had this issue as well - but I'll most likely put it up on the judges panel.

<![CDATA[Looking for Test Manager]]> http://www.animeremix.org/animix_forums/viewtopic.php?pid=11044#p11044 Wed, 15 Feb 2006 16:46:32 -0500 I am looking for a test manager. I have sent out a few emails to those who I think would do a good job. We are working hard to get this site up. Also - for those who are not testers, I may be starting a development forum shortly to help out with anime remix 3.0. I will only be taking a handful of main developers, probably 1 or 2 if any, and some side programmers who will do some basic modules. I will be looking for people with experience in php, javascript, xhtml/html, and various other languages.
