Alas, the moment that we've all been waiting for has arrived; the first anime remix from David Lloyd (dj pretzel) himself.  I first heard of this remix a few weeks ago from Mythril Nazgul, along with a few other attentive listeners/remixers.  They told me it would be a Naruto mix.  Naruto could easily be placed in my personal top 10 favorite anime series.  It's fun, witty, cute, and has serious elements in a near perfect balance, which makes the anime easy to watch and drooling in anticipation for the next episode.  DJ pretzel describes his love for naruto:

"I'm as big a Naruto fan as the next guy or gal, have been keeping track since the first episode came out, and love the whole universe they've created and especially the characters (*cough* GAARA) that inhabit it. This is sort of my tribute to it as a classic anime series, and also my first stab at an anime mix."

I couldn't agree more.. well especially about Gaara ^^;; and of course about Naruto being a classic anime series.

In mastering this song, dj pretzel had to overcome several obsticles.  DJ pretzel decided to remix an ending song (in general, much harder to do than a song that's played in the anime) and decided to sing lyrics as well.  The song "Wind" originally had some interesting properties that made it particularly hard.  The time signature is in 5/4, although this may seem like an easy feat theoretically, trying to find a good genre to mix an odd time signture in and do it well is difficult to implement.  The hardest thing to do is to remix a song in a similar genre of the original song.  When you do this, you better be prepared to either equal or produce a better song.  Personally, I wouldn't remix a song that's already in a trance genre into psy, goa, or any subtype of techno.  I would not be able to out-perform the original artist.  In the case of dj pretzel and his remix of "Wind", dj pretzel did an incredible job with the composition and production of this remix.  The quality is clear, the sound is fresh (full of life), and the song feels complete. The interest djp has with "Wind" along with his implementation fo the remix is best described in his own words:

"I still think 'Wind' is the best ED from Naruto thus far. It's not every day you get an anime piece in 5/4, and a melody so very memorable. Unfortunately, the track might be more... notorious as an example of so-called "engrish", as Akeboshi, god bless them, try to sing in English, but it ends up a little... mangled. Still, mad props to all the multilingual, as I'm sure their English trounces my Japanese up one side and down the other. Especially since all I know how to do is curse and ask for food. At any rate, I love the track and kinda wanted a version with better elocution (if not better singing). Also, I had some ideas about doing a more "unplugged" arrangement, with no synths or electronica fx, just emulations. Everything here is Trilogy/Gigastudio/Sampletank, sequenced in Cubase SX.

I also changed the time signature up at the bridge, shifting to 6/4 temporarily instead of keeping it 5/4 throughout, added a tenor sax solo after spending literally three hours trying for a violin and then a flute instead, and rearranged/rewrote the lyrics so that most of the extended stuff that's not in the TV version is cut, save one bit. Also added vocal harmonization that's very different from what Akeboshi did. This was my first time doing an anime mix and also my first time doing backup vocals, and while the recording is upfront and a little rough around the edges, I still think it represents an improvement over past efforts. It's not the easiest song to sing, really, although some of the minor changes made to the lyrics made it more approachable."

Well we thank dj pretzel very much for this submission, and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did.

  •     Naruto closely follows the life of a boy who is feared and detested by the villagers of the hidden leaf village of Konoha. The distrust of the boy has little to do with the boy himself, but it’s what’s inside him that causes anxiety. Long before Naruto came to be, a Kyuubi (demon fox) with great fury and power waged war taking many lives. The battle ensued for a long time until a man known as the Fourth Hokage, Yondaime, the strongest ninja in Konoha, fiercely fought the Kyuubi. The fight was soon won by Yondaime as he sealed the evil demon in a human body. Thus the boy, Naruto, was born. As Naruto grows he decides to become the strongest ninja in Konoha in an effort to show everyone that he is not as they perceive him to be, but is a human being worthy of love and admiration. But the road to becoming Hokage, the title for the strongest ninja in Konoha, is a long and arduous one. It is a path filled with betrayal, pain, and loss; but with hard work, Naruto may achieve Hokage.
